Increase Safety When Driving

Drivers are unaware of dangerous encounters almost every time they go for a drive. Accidents are unfortunate events that can occur with some of the best drivers, some are small and others are deadly.

Through laws and regulations, there are many ways to increase safety. Here are a few:

Secure every passenger
Drivers and their passengers must be secured in a seat belt before embarking on any journey.

Drive With Caution

Whenever the driver feels out of control, the risk of an accident exists. Drive according to traffic laws to ensure everyone’s safety.

Be Aware of Everything on the Road

The only activities you should take part in while driving, is driving safely.

Safety Seats for Children

Whether a full car seat or just a booster seat, make sure they are installed properly and children are securely strapped in before starting the car.

Be prepared

A safety kit for the car should include a torch (with batteries checked regularly), all the tools needed to change a tire, reflective cones or triangles, jumper cables and a seat belt cutter. A fire extinguisher is good to keep inside the car too. A blanket, gloves and even extra clothing can help if the car breaks down in cold weather. Having a first aid kit in the car trunk is a smart move for any driver.

There are many rules of the road that can save lives whether they are well-known, or little hints or tips discovered along the way. Take the following advice on your next drive:

Secure all items

Expeditious stops and violent turns can endanger passengers if there are a mass amount of loose items present in a car. Loose items are the main cause of many accidents.

Put parental locks on windows

Eight American children were choked due to misuse of power windows in 2004. Accidents like this will happen if a child is exerting force on the window button as they are innocently looking out the window of a car. Most cars have a ‘parental control’ lock-out switch which reverts window control to the driver. Utilizing driver controls reduces the chance of an accident inside the car.

Never leave kids or keys, or both, in the car

Often children will leave a car if left alone, or lock you out. They can release the handbrake allowing it to roll into walls, trees or other traffic. Leaving the keys in the ignition is dangerous to your children and the people and buildings surrounding them. Many children become locked in the trunk when unsupervised by a parent in a car. Leaving the keys in the car invites would-be thieves too.

Keep your car cool
Hot weather does not keep people from leaving children and animals in cars. The heat in cars increase greatly and can threaten the lives of anyone in the car. Hypothermia occurs quickly among those trapped in a cold car.

Every car is made from a lot of metal. Driving responsibly is the first step towards safety, but the driver needs to take every eventuality into consideration. Small things can make the difference, and we’d all rather be safe than sorry!
